In the Celtic tradition, the Holy Spirit is often represented as a wild goose. This image, unlike the image of the dove, is designed to conjure images of squawking birds who are disruptive, free-spirited and mobile. And therefore the wild goose brings with it some important thoughts for transformation. Grounded in the idea that God is up to something in the world, and that you and your neighbours are invited to be part of it, transformational thinking calls for us to be open to seeing new things and even being surprised by what pops up. Things can get a little chaotic! We can long for the so-called 'peaceful' past we once had. But this longing for peace, contentment and stability can short circuit the chances the Holy Spirit provides for transformation and new life. The wild goose may be a helpful way to us to reframe how change happens. Change is disruptive, can seem chaotic and almost always feels uncomfortable while it is happening. The alternative is often mistaken for peacefulness but can be, in reality, just a slow death. So let's be open to the disruptive power of God. It may feel like we've been infiltrated by a flock of geese -- but it may be just exactly what we need to take the next step.
